Project Meal Tracker - Dev Log 0: Init
It's the 15th of December 2023, 18:11.
I want to delve more into writing, and I figured the easiest way would be to write about something I love. Since I love building software, I am going to write about that. I plan to start building apps that I personally would use and document the process. Having even one person who learns something from it, or perhaps just enjoys reading what I am writing, is way beyond my expectations.
I've had this idea in the back of my mind for a while, but until now, I was procrastinating for no good reason. I want to make writing a habit (this is the main reason why I started this blog in the first place) and get better and faster at it. Currently, writing is a painful and long process for me. I am never happy with the outcome because I feel like I am not able to convey my thoughts well enough, or because it feels like too much or too little. Therefore, writing a blog article is a frustrating and long process for me. And I've figured, I need more practice.
I am going to start a dev log or maybe multiple dev logs
I have a few ideas I've always wanted to build but never did because I felt like it's a waste of time, as these ideas have close to zero chance of making any money. By now, I have realized that I simply enjoy building software, and it's not just my profession but also a hobby of mine. So, while at work I have to focus on making the products I am responsible for a commercial success, I don't have to worry about that while working on these hobby projects. Although for me personally, this is the ultimate justification that what I build is good, it takes a stress factor away from the process, making it more enjoyable.
So, I am planning to build some projects to the point where I enjoy the process, perhaps abandon them completely at some point or at least for some time, and will document the process. I am planning to write a short article every time I get to work on them. I'll timebox the writing time to 30 minutes, but will try to finish the articles in 20.
My first project: Meal Tracker
At home, I am the one responsible for the groceries and cooking. Having this responsibility for a while now has also exposed me to a bunch of small, but frustrating enough, problems for myself.
The top 3 are the following:
- Figuring out the menu.
- Maintaining the grocery list.
- Keeping track of what meals we eat when, and how much they are liked by the family.
In the next few weeks, I am going to create a mobile app that hopefully will help make these problems less painful for me and maybe for others as well.

This is how far I got in Project Meal Tracker - Dev Log 0. I will be back very soon.
