AI tools for Product Managers

Me

I’ve been working as a Product Manager (PM) for over a decade. Throughout my career, I’ve held various titles, such as Product Owner, Technical Product Manager, Solution Development Manager, and progressed from junior to senior roles, now holding a Principal title. Despite the different titles, the essence of my job has remained the same:

  1. Get to know your users
  2. Understand their problems
  3. Build a potential solution
  4. Repeat

Over the past decade, there hasn’t been a technological shift as disruptive as the rise of truly useful Large Language Models (LLMs) and advancements in AI. In this article, I’ll share the AI tools I use daily to accelerate my workflow and improve productivity, along with insights into tools that I’ve explored or found less effective.

AI tools I use as a Product Manager

The recent AI wave has added only a few new tools to my stack. Many existing tools integrated AI features, with mixed success. It’s easy to spot which companies addressed real user needs versus those that jumped on the AI hype without delivering meaningful value.

New AI tools in my stack

  1. ChatGPT

Probably the most known tool. I use for a variety of general tasks:

  • Summarizing content
  • Breaking down large blocks of text into tangible categories
  • Correcting emails or making them sound more polite
  • Brainstorming ideas

In my opinion, it's well worth the $20 subscription, and it should be an investment every company is making. Obviously, it could also be one of the alternatives, but such a tool is a must-have for PMs these days.

  1. Cursor

An AI-assisted Integrated Development Environment (IDE) I use for:

  • Writing SQL queries
  • Automating small tasks like scraping competitor websites for updates

While my dev team loves the premium subscription, I find the basic functionality with my OpenAI API key sufficient for my needs.

AI Features in Existing Tools

Some tools I already used have added AI capabilities that I find useful in specific scenarios:

  1. Notion AI
    • Particularly helpful for its enhanced search capabilities.
    • I can describe vaguely what I’m looking for, and Notion reliably surfaces relevant documents.

Tools with AI Integrations I Don’t Use

Some tools have added AI features, but I’ve found them less effective:

  1. Dovetail "Magic"

    • We use Dovetail for organizing user interviews and insights.
    • While colleagues use the summarization feature, I prefer ChatGPT, which delivers better results. To me, the summaries from Dovetail often miss the key points or put emphasis on things that aren't very important.
  2. Typeform AI

    • We use Typeform as our primary survey tool. Its AI-generated questions often require near-complete rewriting, limiting its value.
  3. Mixpanel "Spark AI"

    • Mixpanels AI features haven’t delivered on their promises, possibly due to our event setup. Regardless, expectations remain unmet.

Product Management specific AI tools

Some tools claim to be designed specifically for Product Managers to enhance workflows. However, I haven’t found one compelling enough to switch from my current tools and ChatGPT.

Noteworthy tools I’ve come across

  1. Kraftful: A customer insight curation and collection tool. Link
  2. Motion: A planning automation tool. Link
  3. Julius: A Data analytics tool. Link
